SONY CLASSICAL RELEASES THE PRODUCERS THE NEW MEL BROOKS MUSICAL ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST RECORDING, STARRING NATHAN LANE & MATTHEW BRODERICK CD IN STORES ON TUESDAY, APRIL 17, 2001
Writer/Composer/Lyricist Brooks' Stage Adaptation Of His Academy Award-Winning Film Comedy Opens Thursday, April 19, At Broadway's St. James Theatre(New York, NY - March 29, 2001- On Tuesday, April 17, 2001, Sony Classical will release the original Broadway cast recording of The Producers The New Mel Brooks Musicalstarring Tony Award winners Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, and directed and choreographed by three-time Tony winner Susan Stroman. Produced by Hugh Fordin, the recording - which was taped in New York on Sunday, March 11, 2001 - will be released two days beforeThe Producersopens at Broadway's St. James Theatre (246 W. 44th St.) on Thursday, April 19, 2001.
"Endless in its invention, relentless in its energy, extravagant in its design, witty in its silliness and shameless in its show bizziness, the stage musical of The Producers is an absolutely socko monster hit," Richard Christiansen of the Chicago Tribune wrote, reviewing the musical's Chicago premiere in February.
Based on the Academy Award-winning 1968 film of the same name,The Producersis the story of down-on-his-luck theatrical producers Max Bialystock (Lane) and Leo Bloom (Broderick), his mousy accountant. Together they hatch the ultimate scam: raise more money than you need for a sure-fire Broadway flop and pocket the difference. Their "sure-fire" theatrical fiasco?... None other than the musicalSpringtime for Hitler.
The Producers stars Roger Bart (Carmen Ghia), Gary Beach (Roger DeBris), Cady Huffman (Ulla) and Brad Oscar (Franz Liebkind).
The cast of The Producers also includes Jeffry Denman, Madeleine Doherty, Bryn Dowling, Kathy Fitzgerald, Robert H. Fowler, Adrienne Gibbons, Ida Gilliams, Eric Gunhus, Kimberly Hester, Naomi Kakuk, James LaVerdiere, Matt Loehr, Peter Marinos, Brad Musgrove, Christina Marie Norrup, Angie L. Schworer, Jennifer Smith, Abe Sylvia, Tracy Terstriep, and Ray Wills.
The Producers has a book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan with music and lyrics by Mel Brooks. The creative team for The Producers is comprised of Robin Wagner (sets), William Ivey Long (costumes), Peter Kaczorowski (lighting), Steve Kennedy (sound), Glen Kelly (musical arrangements and supervision), Patrick Brady (musical direction/vocal arrangements) and Doug Besterman (orchestrations).
The Producers is presented by Rocco Landesman; SFX Theatrical Group; the Frankel ( Baruch ( Viertel ( Routh Group; Bob and Harvey Weinstein; Rick Steiner; Robert F.X. Sillerman and Mel Brooks, in association with James D. Stern/ Douglas Meyer and by special arrangement with StudioCanal.
The Producersbegan preview performances in New York on Wednesday, March 21, 2001.
